THE I CAN READ SYSTEM

The I Can Read System was originally developed based on research conducted by Antony Earnshaw and Annabel Seargeant between 1995 and 2000. It is structured, cumulative and hierarchical, and is the first system in the world to link clusters of letters to single sounds in a unique manner.

The reading course enables students to understand how letters combine to create various sounds and empowers students to take control of their reading progress.

The I Can Read system develops all of the necessary skills that all students need to become fluent, independent readers:
• Vocabulary and sentence structure
• Phonological and phonemic awareness
• Basic phonics
• Visual decoding of words
• Visual blending of letters or clusters of letters

The reading course overcomes the difficulties that new readers face when they learn to read and have to combine letters into blended sounds. It overcomes the problem of knowing how to pronounce words when so many letters and clusters of letters can be associated with more than one sound. Commencing with simpler short-vowel sounds, students progress to learn more complex phoneme combinations, building upon their successes along the way.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

At I Can Read, we are committed to providing the highest quality of classroom instruction. We strongly believe in the effectiveness of our curriculum and therefore ensure that all teachers who deliver the I Can Read system go through rigorous teacher training.

To this end, we provide ongoing teacher training and academic support for the duration of our collaboration with all partners. As a result of attending these training sessions, teachers will receive official certification as ICR Reading Specialists.

Training is delivered in the form of live workshops combined with our online training platform. Additional academic support is available as part of I Can Read’s Professional Learning Community, within which you will have direct contact with members of I Can Read’s academic team.
